Learning in Freedom

Welcome to Learning in Freedom, a blog all about the learning adventures (and mishaps) of the Allen family. My four children are unschooled, following their interests and passions every day and living the lives of their choosing. The purpose of this blog is to share our every day lives (and my not-so-humble opinons) with anyone interested in stopping by. We hope this will give a glimpse of how natural learning unfolds from day to day......

Music on the Square

Had a mellow day yesterday, preparing an area for pumpkins and corn and basically just hanging out. In the evening, we headed downtown for some folk and bluegrass. First stop was the Sweet Shop though. My kids have been eagerly awaiting it's re-opening since we moved here in October. You can't get ice cream until summer, as the owners are windsurfing in Australia (according to the sign on the door).

When we got to Music on the Square, Jessica's dh was playing with his band, a nice surprise since we hadn't been told they'd be there! (HINT, HINT Jessica...if you read this!!). Little Aleah was so cute in her little pink dress, running and bouncing and hopping to the music.

Some of the kids brought sidewalk chalk with them and Sierra joined in, coloring the brick sidewalk a variety of colors. The whole atmosphere is so festive and free...we love it down there.
Couldn't leave without a quick stop to the Lollipop Shop, where we picked up edible blowing bubbles, local root beer and a few other treats. It was a lovely evening.

Markus is out showing houses tonight, never thought I'd be so glad to have him gone when I'm not mad at him!!! It's just nice to know he has some clients.:)

Hey! Check out the band's my space site for their play dates. Lost Mountain String Band. They are playing on Sunday at 3pm in Johnson City at Southside School in the Tree Streets area. I think this community is trying to get a regular event each Sunday or every other sunday of players and it is free!!!! I like that. We saw a hillarious guy today at J'boro story telling center. They have one more coming in Aug.5th, Linda Fang - stories from Ancient China. The guy today was just brillant, I about peed my pants laughing and then cried at the end. These are free events, too! Thanks to King Pharmacueticals. The Sunshine Monkeys will be at the JC Library on Thursday at 3:30 - I have not seen them, but it sounds so silly we will have to check it out. It's free and we can leave if it is just too goofy. Oh, did you know about Funfest? It is a big intergenerational celebration in Kingsport for the entire week of July 14-21, 22? The Andrew Johnson School has loads of stuff for kids, draw your own art on a big old van sponsered by Kinko's, petting zoo, loud music, bouncing sliding air mattress fun, old time games, gymnastics, etc... The best thing there is the balloon lift off. It is amayzing! There must be about 40 hot air balloons placed all over the downtown area (streets are blocked off to cars) and they spread out the balloons, fire up the propane tanks, blow these huge fans and slowly the balloons fill up, and up, and up until they just start floating into the sky. It is so neat the kids love it, but I think Mom loves it more! This event is usually in the am (horribly early for our house), but I force them up with great excitement that we have to see the balloons and we can only do this once a year!!!! Check out the Funfest site. What is the chance the MAC guy could pluck my eyebrows? I am still in awe. See you Monday.
