Learning in Freedom

Welcome to Learning in Freedom, a blog all about the learning adventures (and mishaps) of the Allen family. My four children are unschooled, following their interests and passions every day and living the lives of their choosing. The purpose of this blog is to share our every day lives (and my not-so-humble opinons) with anyone interested in stopping by. We hope this will give a glimpse of how natural learning unfolds from day to day......

I'm a Chevy? Ack.

I'm a Chevrolet Corvette!

You're a classic - powerful, athletic, and competitive. You're all about winning the race and getting the job done. While you have a practical everyday side, you get wild when anyone pushes your pedal. You hate to lose, but you hardly ever do.

Take the Which Sports Car Are You? quiz.

The following is something you can cut and paste to your blog, then bold the items you've done.

1. Started your own blog
Um....you're here right?
2. Slept under the stars
Regularly. We dragged some mattresses out onto our deck this summer and watched meteors and stars for hours. Some of us came inside when it got a bit damp.:)
3. Played in a band
Flute. Jr. High school band. woohooo...
4. Visited Hawaii
Several times. Lived there for a year.
5. Watched a meteor shower
See above. I remember camping out in a friend's field one time, to watch the Leonid meteor shower. We didn't see a damn thing but we froze our butts off.
6. Given more than you can afford to charity
7. Been to Disneyland/world
Land. Several times. You can have it.
8. Climbed a mountain
Mt. St. Helens several times, Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood (just shy of the peak).
9. Held a praying mantis
Heck, I've hatched them. Unintentionally, but there ya go.
10. Sang a solo
In my car, all the time.
11. Bungee jumped
Hell no. I value my back more than that.
12. Visited Paris No, but I plan to hike the Compostela trail and Paris will get checked off during that trip.
13. Watched a lightning storm at sea
From our family cabin on Busby island.
14. Taught yourself an art from scratch
Not sure what counts. I took art classes in high school but have learned many things and methods on my own since then.
15. Adopted a child
Not me personally, but my parents adopted three children.
16. Had food poisoning
Um...yeah. Hasn't everyone?
17. Walked to the top of the Statue of Liberty
Thought I'd get a glimpse of it while driving through NY last May. Big mistake.
18. Grown your own vegetables
All the time. Best food you can get.
19. Seen the Mona Lisa in France
One day......
20. Slept on an overnight train
To Mt. Mckinley from Fairbanks. We weren't on the train overnight, but I slept on the train and it WAS an overnight train. :)

23. Taken a sick day when you’re not ill
Most definitely
24. Built a snow fort
I grew up in Alaska, what else was there to do?
25. Held a lamb
Oh yes. They are the most beautiful, adorable creatures ever. I rented a small apartment under a house that was on a sheep/goat farm when I was single. It had rolling green hills and cute babies everywhere.
26. Gone skinny dipping
Hells yeah.
27. Run a Marathon
Nooop. Does a triathlon count? Competed in the Santa Rosa Island triathlon in 2001. Came in 16th for my age group (out of something like 38).
28. Ridden in a gondola in Venice
29. Watched a total eclipse: Solar and lunar
Partial solar, total lunar.
30. Watched a sunrise or sunset
All the time. Doesn't everyone?
31. Hit a home run
I think my Dad was just being nice though and handicapping himself.
32. Been on a cruise
One in Hawaii and one in Mexico. You know, those little dinner cruise type things? Never on those big cruises. I think they sound like one of the most wasteful things you could possibly do. The luxury part always sounds nice until I think about all the waste that must go on to make it happen.
33. Seen Niagara Falls in person
Soon...soon.....
34. Visited the birthplace of your ancestors
Which ancestors? I'm living in Cherokee country. So I live in the birthplace of some ancestors. I'd need to visit a lot of places to get them all though....Scotland, Norway, Switzerland. Who knows what else.....
35. Seen an Amish community
That's on the bucket list. Only I want to live there for a short time.
36. Taught yourself a new language
Working on it still......I need to live in Mexico for a while.
37. Had enough money to be truly satisfied
That's mostly a choice.
38. Seen the Leaning Tower of Pisa in person

That was La's fault. I'm pretty sure I scared small children but had a ton of fun with my gurlz.
42. Seen Old Faithful geyser erupt
Yep, yep.
43. Bought a stranger a meal at a restaurant
When a homeless guy needs food and the restaurant is right there, what else do you do?
44. Visited Africa
My parents and grandparents went, so I have some lovely pics of something I haven't done.:)
45. Walked on a beach by moonlight
Many a time. I lived in Hawaii and Florida yo.
46. Been transported in an ambulance
No, but Bleu was. When Jared was exactly one week old, Bleu fell off Mt. Hood. Scary stuff. I was at the emergency room most of the night with our wee babsy boy, waiting for the ambulance to arrive, not knowing if he was mostly ok or dying. As it turns out, he was injured and had exposure injuries but was mostly ok.
47. Had your portrait painted
That goes with the territory of being in art class.
48. Gone deep sea fishing
Remember the Alaska thing? If you're at my house more than 10 minutes, I'll pull out the pic of my 80 lb. Halibut.

Not the paid-for-tour kind. Just watched the orcas out at our cabin in Alaska. They're all over the Prince William sound area. Grey whales too.
63. Gotten flowers for no reason
Not often enough! But I get chocolate from
complete strangers now. It's good to gear conference talks

81. Visited the Vatican
82. Bought a brand new car
Yeah, bad idea.
83. Walked in Jerusalem
84. Had your picture in the newspaper
85. Read the entire Bible
Probably. I grew up in a Christian cult, dontcha know?
I know more Bible than most Christians, which really
freaks them out because they expect a heathen to be
drooling and dumb. Or at least growing horns or something.
86. Visited the White House
87. Killed and prepared an animal for eating
Um....fishing requires gutting.
88. Had chickenpox
89. Saved someone’s life
Not that I know of, though I've stopped at accidents to help. Held a woman's hand through her flipped over truck and talked her down while the rescue team prepared to cut her out. I think she was mostly uninjured, just trapped. I instructed people to get blankets on an injured pedestrian once. Don't know if she survived or not.

99. Been stung by a bee
Beekeeper. Duh.

Thanks to Frank for the above blog fun!:)

Hey, Ren!

Thanks for playing! Personally, I don't see you as a 'vette. Of course, that's cuz I don't especially like 'vettes (except the early 60s ones) but I do like you. I think of you as more of an Acura NSX-T! (wink!)

And your answers reminded me that I should have bolded two that I didn't:

87. Killed and prepared an animal for eating. Like you, I gotta bold this on because of fish.

and

97. Been involved in a lawsuit. I was part of a class action lawsuit against Microsoft for temp workers simply because I had worked there as a temp for a while before I became an employee. I got a pretty big check from it, too, which was a nice surprise; but I never think of it cuz I wasn't actively involved. It just kinda happened off my radar. Until I got the check!

Well heck, I'd like to think I'm a sleek, sexy Jaguar but I'm so NOT.

A bucket list is your list of things you want to do before you die. Inspired by the movie (though I've not seen it). I knew I loved my son's girlfriend when I walked into her room and she had a big paper plastered on the wall with "things I want to do before I die" where she added items as they inspired her.

She had "sleep in an ice hotel" and such things on there. Very cool.:)

I should start a blogpost about bucket lists...yeah, that's what I'll do.

You are *so* not a Chevy. But if you gotta be a Corvette, you should be a '64 Corvette.
